Grab your Hat and Read with the Cat"
"Read Across America Day" will be celebrated March 3rd
Read Across America Day is a national day celebrating reading--this year on Monday, March 3, 2014. Here in the San Ramon Valley we have added our own flair that captures the spirit of Dr. Seuss. So if you would like to "Grab your Hat and Read with the Cat," sign up to be a guest reader in our schools.
This year's selected book for Read Across America are, The Day the Crayons Quit written by Drew Daywalt and beautifully illustrated by Oliver Jeffers. This book follows the poor Duncan who just wants to color. But when he opens his box of crayons, he finds only letters, all saying the same thing: His crayons have had enough! The quit! Crayons have feelings too!. SRVEA has purchased 40 of these books for our readers to read from and then to donate to the classrooms in our schools. The Day the Crayons Quit is specifically targeted to students in TK-2nd grade. Our second selection targeted to students in grades 3-5 is titled, Thank you Mr. Falker, written by Patricia Polacco. This autobiographical story is the author's personal song of thanks to teachers like Mr. Falker, who quietly but surely change the lives of the children they teach.
We would like to offer up to 4 guest readers to each school wishing to participate in this event. All readers will be scheduled for a half hour time frame between 9:00-11:30 AM. Please click on this link to volunteer to read in a classroom. We would like to thank you in advance for participating in this day with us. Your passion for our schools is greatly appreciated and you are the one's that will make this day a huge success. We look forward to you "lighting" up the minds of our students!
Each school will be organizing their schedule for the day. Please plan to arrive and check in with the school office 15 minutes prior to the time you have committed for further instructions and to pick up your book. If you have any further questions, please contact Carol Loflin at firstname.lastname@example.org or call (925)552-5032.
