FOCUS was established in 1983 by parents and teachers seeking to create a unique partnership in education that would address and enrich the whole child – psychologically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively. The program seeks to build within each student a life-long love of learning. Through engaging classroom instruction, as well as relevant field trips and projects, our exceptional staff has created an environment that challenges the students and encourages their innate curiosity. Students develop a sense of responsibility, self-discipline, confidence, and pride while learning fundamental academics and applying what they have learned beyond the classroom. Parents are partners in their children’s education by volunteering in the classroom and on the governing board of the program. Our students see the value that the adults in their lives place on learning firsthand and they celebrate their own place as a member of a community.
In support of the FOCUS philosophy, we endeavor to provide the following enhancements:
- Lower student-to-adult ratio
- Parental involvement
- Same group of students for four years
- Strong sense of FOCUS community
- Extended learning beyond the classroom
- Second language instruction
- Study of drama and the performing arts
- Enriched holiday experiences
- Additional technology resources
- Staggered day for Kindergarten
- Participation in the Neil Armstrong school community
How do I apply for the program?
Important: You must complete the entire kindergarten district online enrollment and school site registration process at your resident school.
Download a FOCUS application, or pick one up at Parent Information Night or the Neil Armstrong Elementary School office. The Neil Armstrong office must receive a completed application by February, and a parent must attend Parent Information Night in February to be eligible for the Kindergarten lottery. Kindergarten applications will be chosen by lottery in early March, and applicants contacted according to the Kindergarten Admission Policy for the program. Non-Residents from the lottery process will be considered on conditional enrollment placement. Families will be notified in August of that school year. Applications may be submitted anytime for grades 1 through 3, so long as the FOCUS information night has been attended. The application will be added to the current waiting list for that class and contacted as space becomes available.
