Independent Study

Independent Study for Pre-Determined Absences

A parent/guardian must request an independent study in advance of the student's absence:

  • 5-10 consecutive instructional day independent study contract: Must request at least three days in advance
  • 11-14 consecutive instructional day independent study contract: Must request and contact principal five to ten days in advance

As a packet of work can never completely replace the learning that occurs in the classroom, we strongly encourage students and families to limit independent study requests to one per school year.  However, if your family's circumstances necessitate more than one independent study contract within the same school year, you are welcome to request more than one.

To request an Independent Study contract, please submit a filled-out request form to your student's school office.

Independent study for Quarantined Students (commencing 12/8/2021)

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the State of California has changed the laws that guide the continuity of education while students are quarantining. For this reason, SRVUSD is now required to secure a signed quarantine independent study contract from you.

The purpose of this contract is to ensure and document that your student receives school work for the time that they are away from the classroom so that a lapse in learning is minimized and that your student’s absence is correctly communicated with the state.

If you have any questions about this process, please call Educational Services at 925-552-5071. For questions regarding specific work assignments, please contact your student’s teacher.

Parents/Caregivers will receive two emails:

  1. Quarantine Independent Study Contract/Master Agreement. This email from Informed K12 will include a link to access the Independent Study Contract. You and your student should digitally sign and return the contract promptly. Signing the contract will initiate the process for your student’s school/teacher to identify, gather, and share assignments with your student. If you don’t receive an email from Informed K12, please check your spam or junk folder.

Your student will receive their assignments digitally (in the Google folder) or as a paper packet from the teacher. Your student will have one week to complete all work once it has been assigned. Completed work can be submitted by returning it to the teacher or by uploading it into the Google folder provided. The teacher will grade the assignments and update their grade book.

If you have any questions about this process, please call your school office.  For questions regarding specific work assignments, please contact your student’s teacher.   For questions regarding IS contracts prior to 1/18/2022, please call Educational Services at 925-552-5071.
