Mask Mandates in K-12 Settings: 02.28.22
Posted 3/1/22

Dear SRVUSD Community:

As directed by the Board of Education, SRVUSD will continue to follow our guiding principle, to fulfill but not exceed local and state public health requirements. Today, Governor Newsom, the California Department of Public Health, and Contra Costa Health Services announced that beginning on March 14, 2022, indoor masking in K-12 settings will not be required for students, but will instead be strongly recommended. Please note that the mask requirement in schools is lifted effective March 11, 2022, at 11:59 p.m. This means that students, regardless of vaccination status, can be indoors at school without a mask beginning Monday, March 14, 2022 (or over the weekend of March 12-13 if participating in campus activities).

We anticipate that the state will be releasing additional guidance for school employees within the next two weeks. We will share that guidance when it becomes available.

We are empathetic to the fact that there continues to be diverse views and opinions on masking. I ask our entire school community to pull together, please, to respect everyone’s personal choice regarding masking, free of judgment, teasing or peer pressure. I also want to reiterate what the CDPH said today in their update: Be Kind. Be Accepting. Be Respectful. Be Safe.

I want to thank our students, staff, union leaders and entire school community for your patience during this challenging time. Last week, we issued a letter to the Governor, the California Secretary of Public Health and Contra Costa County Health Services, urging for a clear plan, a pathway, explicit direction and clear metrics. Today’s announcement has provided us with just that.

Thank you for your partnership and trust as we move forward.

Take Care,

-John
