Special Dietary Needs

Your child’s health and safety is important to us. As such, we would like to share the protocol SRVUSD follows to accommodate students with food allergies.

According to USDA rules, we are only able to accommodate students with medical food allergies. We are not able to accommodate food preferences or food restrictions due to religious reasons, with the exception of vegetarian diets. Daily, we offer non-meat options typically cheese based items.

The most common food allergies are milk, nuts, cheese, soy and eggs.

Milk: we provide soy milk on demand

Nuts: we do not serve any food containing nuts in elementary and middle schools. However we do bring in products that may be produced in facilities that handle and process nuts, so we cannot guarantee that meals are completely free of traces of nuts, or nut residue. We do serve Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches in our high schools.

Soy, Cheese and Eggs are included in a lot of food items, and we cannot at this time adapt our menus to monitor and guarantee an accommodation for these allergies.

Although we will try our best to accommodate any food allergies, unfortunately, we are currently experiencing staffing and food supply shortages due to the pandemic, which makes it difficult for us to guarantee that your child(ren) will not be served foods they are allergic to. There are several reasons for this and they are listed below:

  • We are not able to use our Point of Sales system at this time, which typically allows our staff to identify students with allergies.
  • Due to the pandemic and a severe staffing shortage, there has been a high turn-over in the kitchen positions, so we are not able rely on our new staff’s ability to know the students and recognize/identify them as they go through the line.
  • Finally, last minute changes in the menus are occurring frequently and are out of our control due to the nation’s food supply chain issues and shortages created by the COVID-19 Pandemic. Unfortunately, the menus posted on our website may not always reflect these changes.

For medical conditions requiring special diets we are required by the USDA to have a Medical Statement to Request Special Needs and/ or Accommodations Form stating the foods to be omitted and the foods that can be substituted.  Forms must be completed and signed by a licensed medical professional each school year.  Once the form is completed,  please submit it to SRVUSDEats@srvusd.net.

For more information regarding Special Needs and/ or Accommodations,  you can email the Child Nutrition Department at SRVUSDEats@srvusd.net or call the office at (925) 824-1836.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during these challenging times.
