The Board of Education of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District invites energetic, visionary, highly qualified educational leaders with a track record of success in leading and managing larger more complex school systems to apply for the position of district superintendent. The superintendent, as chief executive officer of the district, provides overall leadership for curriculum and instruction, standards and assessment, finance and budgeting, personnel, and facilities. The superintendent is also responsible for developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with parents, staff, and community. As a destination district, we want our superintendent to help us continue to grow and improve and become one of our country’s most high performing districts.  The Board of Education has a good track record of keeping a highly competitive salary schedule. District personnel salaries fall at or near the top 10% of California school districts. 


The San Ramon Valley Unified School District seeks a superintendent who:

  • Will ensure the District’s focus remains on the success of all our students
  • Will provide leadership in all school district operations (curriculum, instruction, fiscal, human resources, facilities, and student services)
  • Will maintain a focus on the District’s Leadership Priorities:
    • A Multi-tiered support for to ensure that each student reaches high levels of success
    • A respectful learning and working environment
    • Fiscal responsibility
  • Has a track record of success in closing the achievement gap and raising the achievement level of all students
  • Develops in collaboration with the Board of Education, a strategic vision to connect innovation for next generation academic experiences 
  • Will maintain a collaborative relationship and high level of communication with the Board of Education
  • Is comfortable working with an active and involved Board of Education
  • Has a collaborative, inclusive management style and strongly supports accountability
  • Supports the concept of customer service and sees students and parents as our clients
  • Has experience with an ethnically and culturally diverse community
  • Is able to build the systems and structures that ensure that our successes become sustainable over time
  • Has demonstrated a strong degree of respect for the professionalism of teachers, administrators and classified staffs

  • Will maintain a positive dialogue and partnerships with the business community, city government, and developers
  • Is committed to working with legislators to advocate for improvements in education funding and policy at both the State and Federal levels.
  • Understands and is experienced dealing with both declining enrollment and declining revenues
  • Understands and supports Professional Learning Communities and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)
  • Supports an evaluation system that focuses on accountability and includes feedback from the clients and staff
  • Uses data effectively to support the improvements necessary to help us become one of the best school districts in our country
  • In partnership with the Board of Education, is a passionate, articulate, visible advocate for public education.

  • A Master’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Possession of or eligible for a California administrative credential, preferred
  • Evidence of continuous professional growth
  • Proven leader at building and sustaining highly functioning teams
  • A track record of success as a strong instructional leader


The Board of Education has retained Consultants Mr. Jim Brown and Drs. Sally Frazier and Dennis Smith of Leadership Associates to recruit qualified candidates. The consultants will screen applications and recommend candidates to the Board for interviews and further consideration. The Board will have the opportunity to review all applications submitted. Any contact with board members, in an attempt to influence the selection process, will be considered a breach of professional ethics. Finalists will have an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the community and schools.  Board members reserve the right to visit the District and communities of a candidate prior to a final decision.


The salary will be competitive and based upon qualifications and experience. A multi-year contract with a salary schedule  will be considered.

The San Ramon Valley Unified School District (SRVUSD) covers an 18 square mile area and serves the communities of Alamo, Blackhawk, Danville, Diablo, and San Ramon (including the Dougherty Valley communities in east San Ramon) as well as a small portion of the cities of Walnut Creek and Pleasanton. The District comprises 36 schools serving approximately 31,000 students in Grades TK-12. The District employs over 4,000 people, hiring 250-300 employees per year. With an annual operating budget of over $360 million, SRVUSD receives more than $17 million per year in parent/private donations, and approximately $6.7 million per year from a local parcel tax.

District students are exposed to a rigorous, 21st century, standards-based curriculum with a strong focus on the essential skills including language arts, mathematics, social studies and science. Strong physical education, health, foreign language, technology, and visual and performing arts programs are also offered. SRVUSD has transitioned to the California State Standards, and is committed to ensuring students, parents and staff are fully prepared for this more meaningful, innovative and rich learning experience for all students. Students graduating from District high schools are required to have earned 220 designated credits. Opportunities include a rigorous academic program, outstanding technical and vocational curricula, and innovative elective courses. All students have opportunities to participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities.

SRVUSD  is one of the top performing districts in California. Over 94% of our graduating seniors attend college or university, and District students are accepted into the University of California and the California State University systems at rates far exceeding state averages. Furthermore, the District has been recognized for its excellence through such honors as the coveted State Department of Education's Distinguished Schools Award (schools in the district have received this honor more than 50 times, more than any other district in northern California), and through recognition by the U.S. Department of Education as National Blue Ribbon Schools. The District has a wide range of state and federally-mandated special education programs. The District's Inclusion Program is a model in the state. All district K-12 schools have resource specialist programs and site staff includes at least one resource teacher and a part-time psychologist, speech therapist, and health educator.

The San Ramon Valley Unified School District is located in Danville, California, and encompasses the communities of Alamo, Blackhawk, Danville, Diablo, and San Ramon as well as a small portion of Walnut Creek.
