ELA
The discipline of English language arts (ELA) includes reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing. The core purpose of instruction in English language arts is to help students develop a wide repertoire of tools for communicating ideas, experiences, and perspectives, as well as the ability to interpret, analyze, and evaluate text across content area courses.
For 2026-27: SRVUSD Expands CKLA English Language Arts Program to Grades 4 and 5
The San Ramon Valley Unified School District is pleased to share that at its meeting on April 21, 2026, the Board of Education approved the next phase of the District’s English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum implementation. Beginning in the 2026-27 school year, SRVUSD will adopt Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) for all 4th and 5th grade classrooms. This comprehensive curriculum is already being used successfully in SRVUSD’s K-3 classrooms.
At SRVUSD, we recognize that strong foundational reading skills developed in the early grades are essential for long-term academic success. Expanding CKLA into grades 4 and 5 allows the District to build on the strong literacy foundation established in grades K-2 through CKLA Skills and in grade 3 through CKLA Knowledge, creating a more consistent and aligned approach to reading, writing, speaking, and listening across all elementary grades.
CKLA Knowledge has received high ratings from EdReports and is designed to support students through explicit instruction in grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency; a strong focus on phonics and phonological awareness aligned to the Science of Reading; and content-rich, engaging lessons that build knowledge and support understanding of complex texts.
Families may visit Amplify’s Parent/Caregiver information hub for additional information about CKLA.
Community members who would like to review the instructional materials may do so at the District Office, 699 Old Orchard Drive in Danville, in the lobby of Building B, during the following times:
April 22, 2026, through May 29, 2026
9:00-11:00 a.m. and 1:00-3:00 p.m.
9:00-11:00 a.m. and 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Kindergarten to Grade 3 Skills/Knowledge Curriculum
The K–2 literacy curriculum features phonics instruction, which teaches all 44 sounds and their 150 spellings in a logical sequence that builds independence. Amplify CKLA Core Knowledge for 3rd grade is a comprehensive ELA program providing content-specific instruction aligning with California State Standards.
Scope and Sequence
Kindergarten to Grade 8 Reading and Writing
In addition to CKLA skills in grades K-2, reading and writing instruction is delivered through the Units of Study and Heggerty.
Grades 4–5 each include three units in reading and three units in writing, novel studies, Heggerty and Morpheme Magic.
The Middle School Units of Study series provides a coherent, systematic curriculum in the three types of reading and writing mandated by CA State Standards—opinion/argument, information, and narrative writing.
- K to Grade 5 Heinemann Units of Study
- K to Grade 5 Heggerty
The Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum provides 24-weeks of daily systematic phonemic awareness lessons for use in 1st and 2nd grade classrooms. The lessons are short and engaging, designed to be the perfect supplement to an existing literacy curriculum. Lessons can be used for intervention support for students in 2nd grade and above who struggle to decode.
- Grades 4 to 5 Morpheme Magic
Systematic and explicit morpheme lessons, teaching activities, and more will create morphological awareness for teachers and students. Fifty-three lessons, covering suffixes, prefixes, roots, and Greek combining forms, share a systematic routine that draws from research on how we develop deep word knowledge. This program is sure to enhance advanced word study while building interest and curiosity about words.
Grades 9 to 12 ELA
High School English courses are based on the California Framework for English Language Arts and use novels from the SRVUSD adopted texts to support instruction.
