Heritage Language Schools

The Language School Program provides high school students the ability to take non-SRVUSD courses for languages that are not currently taught at SRVUSD schools in order to earn high school world language credits, with the following guidelines:
  • In order to receive SRVUSD credit for a language course, the class must be taken through one of our approved institutions (see below). Check back frequently as more institutions may be added. SRVUSD will work to expand language offerings.
  • A student cannot get credit for a Language School course that their home school offers (e.g., a student at DVHS cannot get credit for a Chinese course through the Language School Program since Chinese is offered at DVHS).
  • Students participating in the Language School Program cannot be part of the California State Seal of Biliteracy, as there are no tests at the District level at this time to certify if the language courses meet the level of an AP exam. Visit the California State Seal of Biliteracy webpage for more information.
  • Courses approved carry regular credits and are not weighted.
Language School credits DO NOT count as part of the 40 outside credits that can be placed on the SRVUSD transcript.

Language school organizations interested in having their courses approved by SRVUSD should submit this application. For full details and submission guidelines, please refer to the linked document.

Important Information Regarding Heritage Language Courses

Recently, UC Berkeley made some changes to their graduation/degree requirements regarding languages.

Please note that approved high school courses listed on the UC A-G Course List continue to meet UC admission requirements. However, colleges and universities may have their own graduation or degree requirements that can change over time.

Students and families are encouraged to check the admission and graduation requirements of the colleges or universities they are considering before enrolling in these heritage language courses.
