Partnership with Chefs Brigaid

Partnership with Chefs Brigaid

We are transitioning our menu to more scratch cooked meals which feature fresh ingredients and limit the use of processed foods as well as foods containing preservatives or additives. In this endeavor, we have partnered with Brigaid, a company that pairs professional chefs with institutional food service programs. Since January 2022, a full-time Brigaid chef has been working within the Child Nutrition Department to deepen the culinary skills of staff members and expand menu offerings. Together, we’ve introduced several new items, including chicken alfredo, broccoli with garlic confit, BBQ chicken with cornbread, lasagna, and chicken curry. All of these items are compliant with USDA nutritional standards and aimed at increasing student satisfaction. Looking ahead, we are excited to continue developing new recipes, increasing the capacity of our talented staff, and providing our students with wholesome, nourishing food to fuel their days. Find out more about Brigaid here.
Partnership with Eat REAL Certification Program

Partnership with Eat REAL Certification Program

We are partnering with Eat REAL to measure our full nutrition program against a set of evidence-based standards and celebrate our successes. By becoming certified, we will support meaningful changes in the interest of our students' health and reduce our environmental impact. Participating in the process will help us to redefine in our community what school food is and give us a structured way to measure and talk about our values. Find out more here.
Breakfast Program

Breakfast Program

We are thrilled to offer breakfast across all schools this year! Consuming a healthy breakfast is one of the best ways you can ensure your child is ready to learn in school.

What is offered for breakfast?
Just like lunch, the menu meets the nutritional standards set by the USDA and California Department of Education. Each day, the menu features fresh fruit, whole grains, proteins, and milk. View breakfast menus here.

How does breakfast work at Elementary Schools?
Breakfast is free of charge for all students and is offered during the AM recess time. Students will need to either enter a student id, or provide their name and classroom teacher, or select thier picture to receive a breakfast, it varies by school how the student information is collected. Even though their is no charge, we do need to record the students information in order to receive funding for the program. Those students who want to have a breakfast can go to the cafeteria, it is not required.
(Please note, Quail Run Elementary operates a different breakfast program called Grab n Go to the Classroom. Please contact Child Nutrition or Quail Run for more information.)

How does breakfast work at Middle & High Schools?
Some schools offer breakfast before the start of school and some schools offer breakfast after, during an AM passing period. Depending on the school, breakfast is offered either in the cafeteria or at a grab n go station. Students will need to either enter a student id, or provide their name and classroom teacher, or select thier picture to receive a breakfast, it varies by school how the student information is collected. Even though their is no charge, we do need to record the students information in order to receive funding for the program.

For this first semester, cold or shelf stable items will be offered - such as low sugar cereal bars, yogurt, muffins, cheese sticks, and always fresh fruit and milk.

Please note, this is a new program for our Elementary Schools and for many of our Middle Schools. Child Nutrition is monitoring and evaluating the program during the first weeks of school and may make adjustments, such as changing the service time to before school or other models. Breakfast is a requirement of California's new Universal Meal mandate, which provides funding for all students to have access to a free breakfast and lunch for every school day.
