Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA)

Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA)

Special Education Local Plan Areas are unique to California.  In 1977, all school districts and county offices were required to form geographical regions of sufficient size and scope to provide for all special education service needs of students residing within the region’s boundaries.  Each region became known as a Special Education Local Plan Area or SELPA.

Today, there are 136 SELPAs in California that vary in structure from Multi-District SELPAs, County Office SELPAs, or Single District SELPAs.  Each SELPAs comprehensive Local Plan describes how it provides special education services pursuant to Education Code.  San Ramon Valley Unified School District became a single district SELPAs on July 1, 2007 after previously being part of Contra Costa SELPA.  As a single district SELPA, SRVUSD provides a continuum of special education services and supports to students and their families from birth to age 22.
